Design CANTEEN: Design Thinking – Is the User at the Center: Myth or Must-Have?
offlineCan the designer approach teach us to solve problems effectively, creatively, and with a focus on the user?
Design thinking, a concept that has recently been primarily utilized by innovation agencies and product companies, is chosen for its quick and efficient understanding of user needs. However, design thinking can also be an umbrella term for all disciplines such as UX/UI, service, or human-centered design, which are driven by the motivation to place the user at the center.
Where is the boundary between innovation and design? Is it even possible to create products today without focusing on the user? And what is the difference in applying designer approaches to product design and service design? Come and listen to a discussion among experts who work at the intersection of design, research, and innovation.

Design CANTEEN: Design of Innovation in the Public Sector
offlineYou have as many digital apps as you have citizen status. As part of the global trend of digitizing public services, the Czech Republic is also trying to keep up. However, the result is countless apps that differ depending on the department that commissioned them, and citizens, the end users, often cannot even access their solutions in the end.
Where does the issue of digitalization in Czech public administration lie? Could the Czech Republic reach the quality of the Nordic countries if designers received properly prepared briefs? We’ll be asking experts from the Department of Social Innovations at the Czech Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs.

In an open discussion, we will talk with the city’s leadership and urban architects about the future of Zlín’s public spaces and the possibilities of involving the city’s residents in shaping them. All Zlín residents are invited to the discussion.

Workshop Exquisite Corps – New Organising at the End of the World
offlineWhat can different ways of “business” look like — ones that are profitable yet sustainable and meaningful? What if organising itself became your design material? We need designers to act on the polycrisis, using their skills to shift from extractive systems of production that exploit not only nature but also people, toward more regenerative systems. This workshop will introduce current models of economic, business, and governance thinking, explore existing alternatives, and engage participants in collaborative experimentation using the surrealist cadavre exquis technique to generate new organising ideas and expand our imaginative capacities. Exquisite Corps will be facilitated by Paul Mesarcik, Martin Born, and Jakub Lanc in English. The workshop lasts 4 hours, including a lecture, collaborative work, and discussion, and is open to all design disciplines.

Workshop: How to Reconnect with Your Own City?
offline“Nesehnutí” has prepared two workshops for participants. The first one, “The City Belongs to Everyone,” critically evaluates the current trends in urbanism. Participants will reflect together on who shapes the city, what groups live in it, what their needs and expectations are, and who decides on the appearance of modern cities in the Czech Republic. The workshop also focuses on the complex impacts of climate change. The second workshop, “The City and Nature,” examines the role and significance of water, water features, urban greenery, flora, and fauna in our cities. Through examples from both the Czech Republic and around the world, it highlights the often-overlooked role of nature in urban and community environments and encourages a more sensitive perspective toward it. Both workshops include practical and observational tasks and a reflection on how I, as a citizen, can concretely contribute.

The workshop also focuses on the urban and social impacts of climate change. It includes practical and observational tasks, joint discussions, and finding solutions on how to get involved and positively influence the shape of the cities we live in.
The second workshop, called “City and Nature”, explores the role and importance of water, water elements, urban greenery, flora, and fauna in our cities. Using examples from the Czech Republic and around the world, it highlights the often-overlooked role of nature in urban and rural environments and leads to a more sensitive and aware perspective on it. The workshop includes practical tasks for participants, joint reflection, and a debate on how to support and protect nature in the city at both the individual and local levels.
