15. 2. 2021 | Martina Jelínková

Are you talented? Can you come up with something new and also handle the technological processing of things? Your projects are not only beautiful and unique but also functional? Whether you have an unrealized project in your drawer, or you have just set out on your own journey and you know you have something to show the world, sign up for the international competition Best in Design!

1. A valuable experience

Do you love creating? So don’t be afraid to show it. This is really a great experience, the application is completely free. So you can only get something, there is nothing to lose! And if you can’t decide which work you should send, we can tell you one thing – feel free to send them all! If your work meets all the conditions, show it!  You’re not sure if you have the potential? Let the expert jury decide on it.

2. Contacts (and maybe even contracts) in the field

In Best in Design, you will face competition from different parts of the world. You will meet many new people and maybe you will make a number of new friendships. You will exchange views and experiences and the main thing – you will have fun. The Best in Design competition is your gateway to the world of design. Whether you are a fashion designer, a graphic designer, you are interested in calligraphy, you are designing furniture, you are interested in industrial design, or your work is based on the use of only sustainable materials, you will find your place with us. We are open to all ideas.

3. Feedback from capacity in the field

Your work will be evaluated by leaders from various design spheres. Believe that these are people who have been dedicated to their work in design for some time now and they know what is good. They can appreciate the talent and give good advice. The jury evaluates not only the visual side of the design or project but also the technical processing, the materials used, the ecological footprint of the product, and the original approach to the solution. Be creative, fresh, come up with something not yet invented, innovate, and don’t be boring!

The Fashion Design category is evaluated by Tereza Rosálie Kladošová, a talented designer and absolute winner of the thirteenth year of the Czech Grand Design, in the Production Design category the judges are the main designer of Tescoma Ladislav Škoda and Richard Vodička, director of Studio 519. And in the Communication Design category, the contestants will be judged by Filip Koubek, an entrepreneur and co-founder of the award-winning Motionlab personalization video platform.

 4. Money

There is no need to mention we all need money. And now it fits more than ever before. What’s better than getting money for something you’re really good at and spent a lot of time on? The main prize in Best in Design is € 1,500, you can also win € 500 for 1st place in each category, €300 for 2nd place, and €200 for 3rd.

5. Eternal glory

Do you want to shine on the cover of Forbes? Maybe this is the first step on the way to it! You can bet that if you succeed, there will be articles about you. We know you don’t do it for fame or money, but if you’re a talent, why should you keep it a secret?

6. New inspiration

Take a breath and soak up the atmosphere. The finalists of Best in Design will have an exhibition together, but the inspiration can be drawn during the entire Zlín Design Week from 7 to 14 May. In addition to the Best in Design competition, there will also be an exhibition of Open call participants, at the Conference, you can listen to stories and advice on (working) life from interesting people, and expand your horizons even further with the ongoing workshops. Last but not least, you can also enjoy the party and Gala Evening organized as part of the Zlín Design Week. And even if it’s online!

7. Starting point

The Best in Design competition is a starting line for young creators and designers. A large number of well-known people have already emerged from this competition, who sooner or later took place in the field and conquered the world of design. We know that a financial award is pleasant, but Best in Design is definitely not just about it. The most important thing is to participate and take another of the many steps on the road to success.

Finally, let’s briefly summarize the rules of the competition:

  • The submitted work must not be created later than 1. 1. 2019
  • The author(s) must not be older than 30 years
  • The work must be sent with the application and photographs in .jpg format, also there needs to be an annotation of the work
  • You can submit your design in three categories – Product and Industrial Design, Communication Design, and Fashion Design

A meeting of the judges to evaluate the competition proposals will take place in the first quarter of 2021.

We will then announce the winner on May 7, 2021. On this day (hopefully!) we will all meet in Zlín for the finals of Best in Design and find out who are the winners.

Send the application and do not forget that the deadline is February 28, 2021. We will keep our fingers crossed for you and wish that participation in the Best in Design 2021 design competition will bring you a lot of good!
