Functional for me does not mean functional for everyone. The educational programme for the Design for All exhibition introduces students to the issue of universal/inclusive design. It illustrates individual procedures and specific solutions that can be used in the pursuit of an inclusive approach to design using examples of Czech and international projects. In the end, students will have the opportunity to experience the inclusive design process in practice. From a specific focus on one target group and its needs, we will try to work our way up to a comprehensive solution for the widest possible range of users. The programme is intended primarily for students of vocational secondary schools, with a focus on design and architecture.

The workshop with the Berlin studio Büro Famos will take the finalists of the international Best in Design competition and other young designers for one day to the TON company in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. During the day-long workshop, the designers will work with iconic pieces and leftover materials from production, practice their ability to ideate quickly, visualize and prototype, and work in a team with new people. The workshop outputs will then be presented to the general public for the rest of the week directly in Zlín.

The workshop opens up the topic of accessible tourism and participatory cooperation, the possibilities of designing routes, experiences, or services to serve the widest possible group of tourists and visitors. Under the guidance of the lecturer Tereza Kosnarová Venerová, participants will go through the basic terms related to the topic, focus on who we neglect when designing spaces and services, map a specific route/service, and show that sometimes it is not necessarily about removing the barrier itself, but about finding other, accessible ways. The workshop is supported by the EEA Grants and in cooperation with the City of Zlín and the Zlínsko-Luhačovicko organisation.

The exhibition Inspiration: Le Corbusier will take you from Zlín to the collective house Unité d’Habitation in Marseille. Through original photographs, it will present the concepts and ideas of the great Swiss architect Le Corbusier and his unrealised projects in Zlín. The exhibition will reveal his indirect influence on contemporary artists through a selection of products, Czech and international authors who find inspiration in modern architecture and brutalism.

By evoking various individual stories and carefully observing its multiple uses, Maxime Forest will highlight what makes Le Corbusier’s ideas appealing to contemporary designers. Czechdesign is now focusing on service design and specifically on wayfinding in Czech healthcare facilities. We feel that design has a great potential to do a good service to its users. Wayfinding and wayfinding systems can help to alleviate stress or make a service more accessible for various disadvantaged groups. After all, healthcare should be there for everyone. We are a Research Council approved research organisation. We plan to apply “research by design”, design thinking and fair processes to our new project. Come and hear what we are developing and how such a design project is built.

A unique lecture and discussion with Jan Černý, the most outstanding fashion designer of his generation in the Czech Republic. Jan is behind the eponymous brand that balances between streetwear and high fashion, the redesign of the iconic Prestige x Jan sneakers and many other collaborations with tastemakers in the field of culture and music. During the talk, Jan will share his views on the Czech and international fashion situation, his approach to building a brand and a successful business, and the importance of thinking holistically. He will also give listeners specific tips on how to proceed and reveal the behind the scenes of organizing his JAN SHOWs.

The whole ceremony will be hosted by Ester Geislerová, who will introduce successful young designers. Visitors can also look forward to a multimedia performance by the dance group All Style Unit.

In the creative ceramics workshop in the new Keramikes studio, you will try a classic ceramic decoration technique, receive a demonstration and get basic information about the work. There will be three finished forms for you to choose from (tea cup, coffee mug, vase, bowl, and more). These will be glazed with a white glaze, on which you will paint with cobalt using a brush, any motif of your choice and imagination. The products will be baked within three days and handed over by appointment.

On Sunday, May 7, stop by Building 61 as part of Zlin Design Week. All day from 10 AM, there will be a design POP-UP shop where you can buy everything you can think of. You will have three kilograms of clay at your disposal (equivalent to six large mugs). An apron will be provided, and clothing that can get dirty is recommended.

Presenting at a design festival can be a great experience and career opportunity for a designer. How can design festivals create an inclusive environment for designers and make their festival accessible to (not only beginner) designers? Branko Popovic, co-founder of the platform and festival FASHIONCLASH, will share his perspective with Jeffrey Heiligers, co-founder of 1m2 Collective, an interdisciplinary design platform that works towards a more diverse and diverse and inclusive design industry.

So how do we create products that help social inclusion? What barriers do mothers with babies face in public space? 

NOOK is a product that helps to maintain enough privacy while not being excluded from what is happening in the surrounding environment. The idea that the studio ARCHETYPO is working on, helps women who want to be mothers in public space as well as still stay close to their child in every situation. In addition to NOOK MAMA, the studio’s portfolio also includes NOOK WORK, which provides companies and coworking spaces a place with enough privacy for an urgent video conference or a short meeting with a colleague, but also a place to concentrate on an important presentation. Who will be the target audience for the next NOOK?

The ZDW conference brings know-how, inspiring insights, and experience from experts not only in design. This year’s 9th edition, with the subtitle Design and Marketing for All, will allow participants to explore how to create products, services, and communications that consider the needs of human diversity. We will also explore how to make public space in a participatory way, more inclusive processes, and environments in companies, or how diversity is essential for space travel and developing new technologies. Speakers will include Nima Shahinian (industrial designer and Norwegian astronaut candidate), Raquel Marcos (Spanish urban design studio Equal Saare), and Anne Aagaard (Deichman Library Oslo).

Become a designer. We will introduce you to the theoretical production of unique TONAK hats at the workshop. You will learn about the production process, why the hat will be the most sustainable piece in your wardrobe, and how to take care of it. In the second part of the workshop, you will choose from the available hat blanks on the spot, and you can start creating! There will be hat ribbons, straps, beads, feathers, and paints you can use to paint your hat.

Clothing is the most intimate element that touches our skin. Every day our bodies are shaped by what we wear. The feelings that develop in the process may be more intensely experienced by people with autism and/or ADHD. More conscious clothing design can positively affect a person’s well-being. Maureen Selina Laverty is a fashion and product designer who explores how clothing’s contact with the body affects the (mental) well-being of its users.

This year, fashion design gets more space in the programme itself, including workshops for the public and a discussion on inclusive fashion within the Design CANTEEN. This year’s fashion show will feature six finalists and winners who have participated in the international Best in Design competition in the fashion design category over the past years. The show will take place on Wednesday, 10 May, in the iconic space of the Tomas Bata Memorial in Zlín. The aim is not only to support our former finalists and winners but also to connect and highlight the contemporary work of young designers with the Memorial, a contemporary manifesto of modern architecture and the timeless compositional relationships of classical architecture.

The show will present the work of Silvia Zrebná, Markéta Kaplanová, Kristýna Lovas Šenkýřová, Juliana Brnáková, Adéla Mitrengová and the fashion brand Macešky, highlighting their unique perspectives and approaches to contemporary fashion design.

Restriction: The Memorial is a place of remembrance. Please be mindful of your choice of clothing! We also ask that you follow all instructions of the organizing team at the site.
